  • ( ) Myanmar in a tense situation

BANGKOK: A group of Malaysians who just returned from a five-day social visit to Myanmar painted a picture of a country that was tense and restless.

The group of seven, who travelled to Yangon, Mandalay and Lashio, spoke of having to relocate to safer hotels and being subjected to curfews.

They also said Internet access had been cut and only certain telephone calls were being allowed through. Flights into and out of Yangon have also been rescheduled.

The group flew into Yangon on Sept 24 and immediately flew to Lashio via Mandalay.

“The protests are mostly in Yangon and Mandalay. When we arrived in Lashio, everything was peaceful and safe, although we still had to adhere to a curfew and had to go back to the hotel by nine every night,” said group member K.C. More>>

  • ( ) Canadian pedophile suspect arrested

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - The world's most wanted suspected pedophile has been arrested by police in Thailand.

Officials say Canadian schoolteacher Christopher Neil was hiding in the town of a Thai friend. Police believe that friend may have arranged some of Neil's alleged sexual liaisons with young boys.

Thai authorities issued an arrest warrant for Neil after determining that he may have sexually abused boys in Thailand, in addition to the dozen Cambodian and Vietnamese boys Interpol suspects he abused.

The hunt for Neil began three years ago when German police discovered about 200 online photographs of a man sexually abusing children. The man's face was digitally obscured, but German police were able to reconstruct a recognizable image and Interpol circulated those images last week. More>>

  • ( ) More Thai Refugees Expected To Return

BANGKOK, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- More refugees are expected to come home following the return of 11 Thai Muslims who fled to Malaysia two years ago as the authorities use new approaches to convince them, officials said. The first batch, comprising two families and several individuals, was flown to Bangkok last week from Kuala Lumpur and was immediately taken to an unidentified location in the capital by the authorities. "They are not under investigation but we merely want to speak to them," a Thai official said when contacted. He said the 11 came back without any condition attached but declined to say if they would be going home to the restive southern province of Narathiwat. A total of 131 Thai Muslims crossed the border from Narathiwat into Kelantan on Aug 30, 2005, claiming that they feared for their safety due to the unrest in southern Thailand and were detained at the immigration detention centre in Terengganu.
